Handwriting sneak peek

I finished a handwriting commission on Saturday for a wedding this weekend. The bride, who's originally from my home town, got in touch from Australia, where she lives now, via Yeah...Ok...Bye. The world is indeed pretty petite. Here's a sneak peek at one of the table names.
Hopefully there will be some lovely images from the photographer for a blog post after the big day...

Handwritten Table Plan

I was so delighted to be asked to write the table plan and place cards for our friends' wedding at the beginning of the August! It was a brilliant weekend in the Scottish Borders...a smorgesboard of Danish, Sri Lankan and Scottish influences...and plenty of cocktails of course!

They moved to Copenhagen from Scotland a few years ago and opened the award winning bar Ruby ...check it out

P.S A massive thank you to Design Studio B for including Yeah...Ok...Bye in their top 5 design blogs (as their 'favourite by far')!!

Paper Gifts

For our first wedding anniversary we got each other paper gifts.
As we were visiting Paris, my grand plan was to take my husband to the comic book artist, Moebius' shop where he could choose a limited edition print and hopefully have it signed. However, after an expensive taxi ride to the opposite side of the French capital, in a month when Parisiennes generally vacate the city...the shop was closed.
Fortunately, on our last day we took the Metro out to La Defense, home to La Grande Arche and many more futuristic, architectural phenomenons on the outskirts of the city where we happened upon an awesome art store called, Arteum. Needless to say we were there for quite some time exploring the shelves.
I eventually found my 36 year old husband in the 'Petits Artiste' section where he proclaimed, with much excitement, that he had found what he wanted, from me, for our anniversary....a large model cardboard robot by Calafant...
My husband got me 'Sundays Are For Lovers'; a lovely book curated by Maria Alexandra Vettese, by independant American publishers, Lines & Shapes, in which artists express what they like to get up to on a Sunday...I love it.
How do you spend your Sunday?

365 days ago today...

...the sun stayed out from behind the clouds just long enough for me to walk arm in arm with my dad, through 98 of our most treasured family and friends, who had travelled from near and VERY far, to marry the man I love.
Then it rained.
Then the sun reappeared and we all drank champagne and daiquiris, laughed at the speeches, ate halibut & cheesecake, danced the longest and most awesome Strip the Willow and almost set fire to a small village on the outskirts of Edinburgh with thai lanterns.
I'd do it all over again in a heart beat...including the last 7 years with my now-husband...

I'll be there for you

This was one of my first handwriting commissions and is a favourite poem of mine. It's called 'I'll be there for you' by Louise Cuddon. Perfect for a reading at a wedding...which it was. It was a gift from the reader to the happy couple.

Etiquette

Is it bad etiquette to wear a white/ivory/cream dress to a friend's wedding? Does anyone care anymore? Am I just looking for an excuse to buy this dress? Am I asking too many questions? Is anybody out there?

Wedding Inspiration

I feel the time has come that I can confess that I made a wedding inspration board. Don't judge me. In my defence, being an interior designer I have to create these for all the projects I work on and they are always invaluable, not only to the client but to me too. It helped to get everything out of my head/magazines/hard drive and give the venue dressers a clearer idea of what I was blabbering on about. Also, in my defence, it worked and everything was exactly as we wanted...one day I might post some of the official photos.
Here it is...a Scottish summer wedding...

I tried so hard not to be a bridezilla but my family, now husband and especially bridesmaids may tell you I 'left the building' for a couple of months before the big day. I'm back now though and am forever indebted to those who stood by me through my emotional blackout x

Joyce Paton

Not only is Joyce Paton the Scottish Style Awards, Accessory Designer of the Year 2009, she was my saviour 3 weeks before my wedding!
I knew I wanted to wear a huge fabric flower on my head, so bought one and then thought I'd be able to make something myself...WRONG!
In a panic, I went down to Joyce's gorgeous shop in South Queensferry where she immediately put me at ease and after we had a good laugh, a cup of tea and I had tried on everything in the shop, she sorted everything, including a hairdresser for the day (which i hadnt sorted yet!)
She had to remake part of the flower I had bought and added it to a beautiful vintage headpiece with white feathers close to my head...perfect! I loved it and didn't take it off all day.
Incidentally the hairdresser she put me in touch with, Emma, is now the only person I will have do my hair for life!
If you ever need any sort of head wear I thoroughly recommend visiting Joyce. Here are some of her fantastic creations.

Neil Roland, Photographer

Had to tell you about one of our favourite wedding gifts: this beautiful montage from my cousin, Neil Roland. He's a very talented, well known photographer based in Manchester. As it happens Manchester is also home to a fair few members of my family and where my husband's grandmother emigrated to Australia from in the 50s.

He created it just for us and called it 'Roots to the Future'. Every part of it symbolises something to do with us. It includes a copy of my great, great granfather's papers used to escape Russia during the war (which i had never seen before); a vintage image of Australia when it was known as 'New Holland'; each image of our initials are from signage of famous buildings in Manchester and the art deco door handles are from the Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow where i grew up.
Here's a few of my favourites from his collections.

The 1st image was taken by me and the rest are from Neil's website

Handwritten by... me

Where to start?
Well, i suppose, as my intention is for this blog to be about my work, as well as my findings, it's probably best to start by showing you some of my handwriting.
When the time came to think about our wedding invitations i wanted them to be clean, informal (ish) and most of all, very personal to us...so i toyed with the idea of writing them myself. I am also in LOVE with all things letter pressed so after a little help from a graphic designer friend my writing was sent off to the printer to be pressed on simple, postcard size, off white card.
I think the style of our invite says a lot about us & the style of our day. Relaxed, personal, fun and a little bit different.
Since then I have had several requests from restaurant menus to tattoos and poems from husband to wife, father to newborn baby and more...I'm pretty sure I'll be posting more about our wedding very soon but for now here's a taster of my handwriting work. So, if you need anything handwritten drop me an email!
